Accommodation and village location

Everything you need and more - I wasn't expecting decent modern showers like you get in big hotels! Mike Ruston, BikeRadar Aug 09

High Quality Gites

Our Self-Catering Gites (rural cottages) have been renovated to a good standard with modern shower rooms, well equipped kitchens and comfortable beds with a 2** rating from Gites de France. They can accommodate a maximum of 4 people (2 bedrooms), 5 (2 bedrooms) and 6 persons (3 bedrooms) giving you the option to book as a couple, family or a group of up to 15 people. Each gite has a private terrace and BBQ and are situated alongside a small canal with a backdrop of the Vercors. They are independent of us in the main house but we are on hand should we be needed to offer advice on the best route for the day, any local info or general advice.

New for 2012 - our newly converted B&B accommodation available from April. 1 double and 1 triple room each with their own independent access.

The house and site is a former 18th Century Mill and historically important to St.Jean-en-Royans and the surrounding region. The market town of St.Jean-en-Royans was the largest and most prosperous of the Royans villages due to its location at the base of the Vercors and its matrix of canals and rivers supplying endless hydro power. The town became a hub of industry in the Royans, particularly in the manufacture of wood and textiles and our former mill played an important part in manufacturing wooden Tableware.  It is documented in the Drome Photo Library and we have 2 wonderful photos left by the former owners taken at the end of the 19th Century.

Shopping and Eating Out

Shopping for food is easy and a thoroughly enjoyable experience as a short 5 min stroll will bring you into the heart of  St.Jean-en-Royans with its great infrastructure of shops, cafes and restaurants. There is the opportunity to stock up at the local Supermarket (a short drive to the edge of town) or ditch the car and shop at the smaller, independent shops where there is a great pride placed on providing local, high quality produce. There are 3 bakers, a butchers and deli, a greengrocers, an artisan Patisserie dedicated to creating the most wonderful cakes and handmade chocolate. The town also provides a host of other shops and facilities you may need during your holiday including a smaller supermarket, banks, chemists, church, office of tourism, doctor, physio, sports, clothes and shoe shops, hairdressers, beauty salon...the list goes on. There is also a small food market every Thursday with a choice of cheese and food stalls. Our neighbour and former Elite Cyclist runs an 'Organic Trout Farm' offering fresh or smoked fish which you can buy direct.

For eating out the town offers a choice of gourmet, bistro or take-away. We can also suggest other restaurants in nearby villages that either ourselves or guests have recommended.

We also offer home cooked evening meals using local, seasonal produce and encourage guests to reserve a place for the evening of their arrival to meet us and other guests on a social basis and to discuss the week ahead.
