Are you having second thoughts about a 'staycation'?

June 28, 2020

For guests now considering a cycling trip to France but maybe still a little worried, we would like to reassure guests that it is possible to create their own ‘social bubble’ here at Velo Vercors, if that is your preferred option.

Each of the self-catering gites have their own private terrace and BBQ. The large garden makes it easy to find a quiet area to social distance and bikes can be kept in the gite rather than the bike shed to avoid any interaction with other guests.

A drive from the UK is doable in a day depending on where you are based in the UK. From Calais it takes 8-9 hours on the autoroute which is generally quiet compared to UK roads. There is also the option to take the Eurostar and either pick up a hire car or take advantage of our taxi transfers.

Not only does the Royans and the Vercors offer a unique riding experience on quiet roads through breath taking gorges, vertiginous cliff roads, grassy alpine meadows, rivers, majestic waterfalls and quaint, medieval villages, it is also a destination away from crowds and mass tourism. The town of St.Jean is buzzy with locals and French tourists but relaxed, without crowds or queues and is a lovely place to soak up the atmosphere of day to day life in France.

The other good news is that the region has been designated by the French Government a ‘Green’ area with very low numbers having contracted Covid 19, even during the peak of the pandemic. The local administration took the initiative to ‘lock down’ the nursing home three weeks prior to the official confinement period to ensure the most vulnerable people in the community were protected and to their credit, not one person died.

So, if you want to be guaranteed a cycling holiday on roads less travelled surrounded by nature, history, food and wine the Vercors is a superb place to be this summer. We’ll give you a warm welcome…at a distance, if that’s what you’d prefer!
